Subject: NVO status report Date: Thursday, January 22, 2004 4:54 AM From: Robert Hanisch Reply-To: "Robert Hanisch" To: Peter Quinn , , , , , , , Cc: 'IVOA' Dear Colleagues, This is an extract from the current NVO Quarterly Report. I believe it summarizes recent NVO activities pretty well. I am happy to expand on any issues of interest at the IVOA meeting next week. Cheers, Bob The primary activities in the first quarter of the NVO project's third year were oriented toward a new set of science demonstration projects that were succesfully shown at the Atlanta (January 2004) American Astronomical Society meeting, and toward several key technical development areas: resource registries, data models, a spectral data access protocol, and increasing use of grid-based computational resources. A new collaboration on public outreach in which a next-generation web browser will provide easy access to NVO-based content is taking shape, and initial results were also shown at the Atlanta AAS. Following a successful VO Software Tutorial held just prior to the annual Astronomical Data Analysis Software and Systems (ADASS) Conference in Strasbourg, France (October, co-organized with IVOA partners), planning has begun on an NVO Summer School in which we will provide detailed instruction to astronomers outside the NVO project in how to use NVO toolkits and build NVO-enabled science applications. A redesign of the NVO web site has also been started, changing the orientation to the astronomer end-user rather than the NVO development team. We held our annual review meeting with the NVO Advisory Committee, with initial informal feedback being very positive. (A formal report is expected in late January.) NVO team members continue working with the International Virtual Observatory Alliance, leading several IVOA Working Groups, actively participating in all others, and helping to organize the important Interoperability Workshops in which technical discussions covering all aspects of VO development take place. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Quinn" To: ; ; ; ; ; ; ; Cc: "'IVOA'" Sent: Wednesday, January 21, 2004 7:58 AM Subject: Meeting next week > Dear WG Chairs > > I remind you that I would like to get short written reports (1-2 pages) > from each WG regarding the status of working group discussions, documents, > progress since Strasbourg, plans for upcoming documents/standards and > involvement in January demos.
