ArVO

Armenian Virtual Observatory (ArVO), report 2015.12.21

1. ArVO initiated project of Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory (BAO) Plate Archive digitization and scientific usage (shortly, BAO Plate Archive Project, BAO PAP) is active. The project is aimed at compilation, accounting, digitization of BAO observational archive photographic plates and films, as well as their incorporation in databases with modern standards and methods, providing access for all observational material and development of new scientific programs based on this material. BAO electronic plate database will be accomplished and an interactive sky map will be built allowing access and using the digitized data.

2. A meeting “Astronomical Surveys and Big Data” dedicated to 50th anniversary of Markarian Survey and 10th anniversary of Armenian Virtual Observatory (ArVO) was held on 5-8 Oct 2015 in Byurakan, Armenia. It combined astronomers and computer scientists with heavy involvement of astronomical surveys, catalogs, archives, databases and VOs. IVOA and national VO project chairs and representatives Christophe Arviset, Andy Lawrence, Joachim Wambsganss, Oleg Malkov, Areg Mickaelian, and others attended the meeting. The Proceedings will be published by Astronomical Society of the Pacific Conference Series (ASPCF) in early 2016.

3. Armenia now hosts an IAU Regional Office of Astronomy for Development (ROAD), namely South West Asian (SWA) one. The Inauguration Ceremony was held on 13 Oct 2015 in Byurakan. VO will be one of the priorities in SWA ROAD and ArVO will take responsibility for this. One of the plans is to promote VO ideas in neighboring countries.

AstroGrid

It continues to be the case that UK based VO work is carried out under the Euro-VO umbrella. The prominent exception is the Astrotrop project, which combines UK astronomers and engineers with forest monitoring scientists, re-purposing VO concepts and technologies in another field. The closing conference will take place in Leeds during Feb 23-24. This may be of interest to other astronomers and related technologists. I will advertise more details shortly.

Euro_VO

Since the last Euro_VO report to the IVOA Exec (attached to the TM59 agenda), the ASTERICS "VO" Workpackage 4, Data Access, Discovery and Interoperability (DADI) held two successful meetings:

  • The Italian partner, INAF, organised the First ASTERICS ESFRI Forum and Training Event in Trieste, 3-4 December 2015. All the DADI partners were represented. One objective was to gather the requirements of the large infrastructures whih participate in the project with respect to the VO. The meeting web site is here: https://www.astron.nl/asterics/doku.php?id=open:wp4:wp4esfriforum1.
  • The Spanish partner, INTA, organised the First ATERICS School fr Scientists in Madrid, 15-17 December 2015. The School gathered participants from 11 European countries, well beyond the ASTERICS DADI partners. As usual, the VO tutorials developed by Euro-VO over the years were updated and will be posted on the Euro-VO web site shortly after the School. The School web site is here: https://www.astron.nl/asterics/doku.php?id=open:wp4:school1. The schools organised at European level are used as templates for national events.
The next events will be the Second DADI Technology Forum, which will be organised in Edinburgh in March 2016, and the "First Data Providers Forum and Trainng Event", which will be held in Heidelberg 15-16 June 2016. Information about DADI activities are posted at https://www.astron.nl/asterics/doku.php?id=open:wp4:start and regularly updated.

The ADASS and IVOA Interoperability meetings are also of course relevant to the DADI activities. DADI partners are also invited to participate in the Plenary meetins of the Research Data Alliance. The next RDA Plenary, the 7th, will be held in Tokyo 1-3 March 2016 https://rd-alliance.org/plenary-meetings/rda-seventh-plenary-meeting.html. These meetings are clearly of interest for several of the IVOA activities. A RDA status report will be presented at the Cape Town Interop.

ESAVO

France VO

The renewal of the "Action Spécifique Observatoires Virtuels France" (ASOV), which is the national structure funded at the national level to support the French VO initiative, was discussed at the beginning of December 2015 at a meeting of the relevant CNRS/INSU Committee (Commission Spécialisée Astronomie-Astrophysique). ASOV will be renewed with a role expended to the support of the technical exchanges between people working in data dissemination services (as suggested after the last national strategic exercise for astronomy in 2014), and to more liaison with IT Research programmes. ASOV will continue to coordinate VO activities in astronomy and nearby disciplines in the country. The ASOV only provides travel money, for IVOA and other similar meetings, collaboration meetings between French teams, meetings focussed on specific topics (eg, VO for planetary sciences). ASOV was created in 2004 and it has been successful in creating and supporting on the long term a very active and visible French VO community.

USVOA

The second meeting of the USVOA is scheduled for the upcoming Jan 2016 AAS meeting. The meeting is scheduled for Wed, Jan06 @10am. The plan is to provide US participants with an overview of key IVOA progress and activities, and describe IVOA operations activities. The group will hear from several projects that are considered non-insiders who will share their views and VO expectations. Focus presentations from new/active projects is planned, along with an open discussion on software information sharing.
