Implementation of an XML Schema describing a resource to
be used in the Virtual Observatory Project. Based on "Resource
Metadata for the Virtual Observatory", Version 0.8,
February 2002 by Bob Hanisch et al.
Diff 0.05-0.06: The Topologi tool apparently doesn't like
annotations of global elements referenced locally.
Although, this does not appear to be in violation of the XML
Schema standard, they have been commented out for the time
being.
Diff 0.06-0.1: Changed target namespace to
http://www.ivoa.net/xml/prop/VOResource.
Diff 0.8-0.1: Updated for RM v0.8; jumped version # to match RM.
Diff 0.8.1-0.8: A proposed structuring of the RM model for v0.9
Diff 0.8.2-0.8.1: "Manager" changed back to "Publisher";
"Subject" contents elevated one level, "Topic" changed back
to "Subject"; more documentation; "ResourceKey" made
mandatory; added extensible relationships.
Diff 0.8.3-0.8.2: fix bug in def of VOResource; set minimum mandatory
elements; added LogicalIdentifier; added admin attributes to Resource:
created, updated, status; moved Description, ReferenceURL, Source to
Summary element; added Source; correct misspelling of categoryType;
added "Other" type; make RelatedTo a ResourceReferenceType; dropped
ManagedResourceType; dropped Contact/Address,Phone; added role
attribute to Date; dropped ProjectRef,DataCollRef,ServiceRef,OrgRef;
Interface overhaul: move URL (as AccessURL) up as common child, move
ParamHTTPGet to VODataService (as ParamHTTP).
A description of one or more VO Resources
This element is used as a general container for multiple resource
descriptions and can be used as a root element.
A description of a single VO Resource
This element is used as a general container for a single resource
descriptions and can be used as a root element.
Any entity that is describable and identifiable by a IVOA Identifier.
This is typically not provided unless this resource is
claiming to be a mirror of another. Multiple
LogicalIdentifiers can be present, usually with different
role attributes. For each role, there should be a
corresponding relationship described under a RelatedResource,
when applicable.
The date this resource metadata description was created.
The date this resource metadata description was last updated.
a tag indicating whether this resource is believed to be still
actively maintained.
resource is believed to be currently maintained, and its
description is up to date (default).
resource is apparently not being maintained at the present.
resource publisher has explicitly deleted the resource.
Identifier
Unambiguous reference to the resource conforming to the IVOA
standard for identifiers
the identifier of a namespace under the control of
a single naming authority
a name for a resource that is unique within an
authority's namespace
Title
the full name of a resource
a short name or abbreviation for this resource that applications
may use to refer to this resource in a compact display.
One word or a few letters is recommended.
An informational, human-readable overview of a resource.
Description
An account of the nature of the resource
Source
a bibliographic reference from which the present resource is
derived or extracted.
This is intended to point to an article in the published
literature. An ADS Bibcode is recommended as a value when
available.
The reference format. Recognized values include "bibcode",
refering to a standard astronomical bibcode bibcode
(http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/simbad/refcode.html).
URL pointing to a human-readable document describing this
resource.
Type
Nature or genre of the content of the resource
resource that does not fall into any of the category names
currently defined.
Collection of pointed observations
Collection of bibliographic reference, abstracts, and
publications
Collection of derived data, primarily in tabular form
Collection of scholarly publications under common editorial
policy
Collection of published materials (journals, books, etc.)
Theoretical simulation or model
Collection of observations covering substantial and
contiguous areas of the sky
A service that transforms data
Collection of materials appropriate for educational use, such
as teaching resources, curricula, etc.
Collection of materials appropriate for public outreach, such
as press releases and photo galleries
Collection of materials that may be suitable for EPO
products but which are not in final product form, as in Type
Outreach or Type Education. EPOResource would apply,
e.g., to archives with easily accessed preview images or to
surveys with easy-to-use images.
Animation clips of astronomical phenomena
Artists' renderings of astronomical phenomena or objects
Background information on astronomical phenomena or objects
Compilations of basic astronomical facts about objects,
such as approximate distance or membership in constellation.
Historical information about astronomical objects
Publication-quality photographs of astronomical objects
Press releases about astronomical objects
An organization that is a publisher or curator of other
resources.
A project that is a publisher or curator of other resources
Collection of pointed observations
an description of a relationship to another resource.
a property that relates one resource to another.
the resource that is related to the current one being described.
a reference to a group of resources which the current resouce
claims to be similar to in some way. A resource's registered
identifier (given by the Identifier element) is its default
LogicalIdentifier.
a name refering to the characteristic that relates resources
having this logical identifier.
recognized values include "mirror" indicating that all
resources with this logical ID are mirrors of each other;
when role="mirror", there should be associated "mirror-of"
relationship metadata.
Information regarding the general curation of the resource
Publisher
Entity (e.g. person or organisation) responsible for making the
resource available
Information that can be used for contacting someone with
regard to this resource.
the name of someone or something
This name may or may not refer to a resource; thus it is more
generic than "Title".
an email address
Date
Date associated with an event in the life cycle of the
resource.
This will typically be associated with the creation or availability
(i.e., most recent release or version) of the resource.
A string indicating what the date refers to.
While this vocabulary is uncontroled, recognized strings
include "creation", indicating the date that the resource
itself was created, and "updated", indicating when the
resource was updated last. The default value,
"representative", means that the date is a rough
representation of the time coverage of the resource.
Note that this date refers to the resource; dates describing
the metadata description of the resource are handled by
the "created" and "updated" attributes of the Resource
element.
Contributor
Entity responsible for contributions to the content of the resource
Creator
The entity (e.g. person or organisation) primarily responsible for
creating the content or constitution of the resource
URL pointing to a graphical logo, which may be used to help
identify the information source
Label associated with creation or availablilty of a version of
a resource.
Subject
List of topics, object types, or other descriptive keywords
about the resource.
Terms for Subject should be drawn from the IAU Astronomy Thesaurus
(http://msowww.anu.edu.au/library/thesaurus/).
Subject
Subject.ContentLevel
Description of the content level or intended audience

Subject
Subject.Instrument
the observatory or facility used to collect the data
contained or managed by this resource.
Subject
Subject.Instrument
the Instrument used to collect the data contain or
managed by a resource.
A resource that provides an interface for executing some operation
or retrieving data.
A description (or pointer) to a service interface.
Normally, a member of the Interface substitutionGroup is
used to provide this information. A raw Interface element
should only be used when there is no applicable
substitutionGroup member.
This is typically used as a base type for defining specific
kinds of service interfaces. If this type is used
directly, the Description element should be used to describe
how to invoke the service.
Specifically, a textual description of the interface.
This is typically only used when a structured description
is not available or supported for this particular type of
interface.
Whether this refers to a base or full URL depends on
the specific class of interface. If
Editor's note: this element assumes that
all registered services are inherently web based.
The type of interface used by the current Service,
expressed as a controlled name.
A custom web-based interface that does not fit into
any of the other predefined types.
A Description element should be used to describe how to
use the AccessURL to invoke the service.
A service that is described using extended Interface metadata.
This value should be chosen when Interface is extended to add
additional metadata. See ParamHTTPGet defined in VODataService
as an example.
A Web Service that is describable by a WSDL document.
The AccessURL element gives the URL to the WSDL document for
the service.
A (form-based) service intended to be accessed interactively
by a user via a web browser.
The AccessURL element gives the URL to the HTML
document used to access the service.
A web-based service that is described in a GLU registry.
The AccessURL element gives the URL to the GLU record
describing the service.
A full or base URL that can be used to access data or a service.
A flag indicating whether this should be interpreted as a base
URL, a full URL, or a URL to a directory that will produce a
listing of files.
The default value assumed when one is not given depends on the
context.
Assume a full URL--that is, one that can be invoked
directly without alteration. This usually returns a
single document or file.
Assume a base URL--that is, one requiring an extra portion
to be appended before being invoked.
Assume URL points to a directory that will return a listing
of files.
a specific description of the context and capabilities of a service.
This is a base type for defining specific kinds of service
capability descriptions, each with its own special mark-up schema.
An identifier for a registered standard.
A URL that points to a human-readable document that describes the
standard upon which a resource is based.
This is different from the Service's ReferenceURL, which should
describe the specific implementation of the standard service.
