IVOA Standing Committee on Science Priorities (CSP)

These pages are being updated by the current CSP.

Terms of Reference (2021-):

The IVOA recognizes that sustaining the scientific impact of the VO as an interoperable ecosystem to support science requires continuous engagement of the international astronomical community. The astronomy community comprises missions that are active or under development, operating observatories, astronomical archives, and teams of astronomers performing research and disseminating data products to the community. The primary goal of the CSP is to support the Executive Committee in its goal of sustaining the VO's impact, as follows:

  • Advise the Executive Committee on strategies for engaging the astronomical community as a participant in the Virtual Observatory.
  • Demonstrate to the community the benefits of participation in the IVOA, such as growth in the scientific return of data; the capability to discover and fuse multiple data sets; the application of the VO in planning new observations and observing strategies.
  • Recommend scientific priorities and scientific requirements that will drive the development of new services, protocols and tools, which will be developed by the IVOA and coordinated by the TCG. These priorities should be driven by scientific use cases that are developed in cooperation with the scientific community.
  • Support the TCG in the development of protocols to ensure they meet the actual scientific requirements
  • Support VO members in developing tutorials, workshops and scientific training materials.
The Chair, Vice Chair and membership of the CSP will be determined by the IVOA Exec. The Chair of the IVOA TCG shall be a members ex-officio of the CSP. The Chair and Vice Chair of the CSP are members ex-officio of the TCG. The nominal term for Chair and Vice Chair of the CSP is expected to be 3 years. It is expected that the CSP will be consisted largely of members of the science community and active astronomy projects. The Chair of the Committee has the responsibility to coordinate the activities and to report to the Executive.

High Energy Interest Group (HEIG)

At the May 2023 Interop in Bologna a group interested in high energy data met to discuss support of High Energy data in IVOA. In the short-term we will explore the following:

1) Document Event list formats for your project & Good time interval information

2) Whether an Obscore extension for High Energy data should be considered - What do you need to discover your data in the registry that isn’t in the current Obscore std?

3) Outline use cases to provide examples of interoperability issues as input to this group.
