Summary

The DCP IG meeting was attended by about 20 people.

Reviewed DCP initiatives that participants are aware of in the US and Europe.

  • NSF data curation and preservation centers to be established soon. Variety of approaches to be supported. NSF-sponsored researchers will soon be required to submit data management plan as condition for funding.

  • European initiatives include Digital Preservation Europe, CASPAR, PLANETS, and eContentplus. The UK has a Digital Curation Center program, digital curation journal, curation manual, and sponsors international conferences. EuroVO has support from the EC for establishing data repositories. In Germany there are programs such as KOPAL and NESTOR, and the Max-Planck Society has established a service institution for digital preservation.

Will provide links to these initiatives on the DCP IG twiki page.

TRAC (Trustworthy Repositories Audit and Certification) program is of potential interest for increasing user confidence in archives. TRAC moving toward becoming ISO standard.

Some LSST data products are only generated dynamically. Raises question of potential need to preserve software. May be easier in the future with virtual machines technology.

Plans being made to digitize the Harvard plate collection (600K plates). 300-1000 exposures of all sky locations over 100 years.

Agreed to write White Paper:

  • VO interests in DCP initiatives and how VO personnel might influence and participate in these
  • VO interests in quality of data and metadata, including how to capture science legacy/context from people
  • Review of interoperability standards emerging elsewhere and relevance to VO
  • Software preservation
  • Data preservation cost-benefit discussion

Will prepare outline and initial draft for discussion at May 2008 Interop in Trieste.
