Rationale
This working group will investigate, develop, and recommend protocols and standards to enable interoperability across a broad range of functionalities, including but not limited to:
- Authentication and Authorization: Establishing secure and consistent methods for user authentication and authorization across platforms, enabling single sign-on capabilities and granular access control.
- Credential Delegation: Facilitating secure delegation of user credentials, allowing authorized applications and services to access resources on behalf of users without sharing sensitive login information.
- Workflow Execution and Management: Defining protocols for interoperable workflow descriptions, execution, and monitoring, enabling researchers to seamlessly port and share complex analysis pipelines across different platforms.
- Workflow Analysis and Provenance: Developing standards for capturing and exchanging workflow provenance information, enabling reproducibility and facilitating collaborative analysis of scientific results.
- User Data Interchange and User Areas: Establishing secure and efficient mechanisms for sharing and synchronizing user data and personalized settings across platforms, ensuring a consistent user experience.
- Execution Interfaces and APIs: Defining standardized APIs and interfaces for accessing platform functionalities, promoting code reusability and simplifying integration efforts.
- Cloud Technologies and Deployment: Addressing interoperability challenges related to cloud-based deployments, including containerization, resource management, and data transfer.
This group is a continuation of the GWS IVOA protocol and it was formed from a merger of the Web Services group and the Grid group, ordered at the IAU General Assembly in 2003.
Participation
The DSP is following a
roadmap for our activities, that we update at every
IVOA Interoperability Meeting which occur twice per year. The DSP has a different topic of discussion and ongoing
activities and interacts with other WG in the IVOA. Discussions are led on the DSP mailing list, where everybody can post his ideas and comments or follow the discussions.
The DSP is organizing periodic
teleconferences dedicated to specific topics or general update of the activities.
The most important output of the working group are the
specification documents that formalizes the modeling efforts led by this group and propose standards to the
IVOA standardization process. Some members take an active role in writing these documents, while others review the documents, make comments, and/or possibly test and implement the proposed design.
Mailing list
- The main mailing list for the group is: dsp@ivoa.net
Teleconference
The working group is experimenting with holding monthly telecons to share information and experiences with relevant technologies and standards. Please look to the activity in the DSP mailing list for more detailed information.

Current Roadmap
Below is the roadmap for the Grid and Web Services Working Group after Virtual Interop 2024 (Nov).
- Execution Broker (previously known as Execution Planner)
Consolidated Working Draft at
https://githuhttps://github.com/ivoa-std/ExecutionBroker
Prototype in development by Dave Morris, expected for Malta, following the
P3T new convention
Working on a new version of UWS, to work in coordination with a new TAP server implementation, in line with
P3T effort, using <a data-wikiword="OpenAPI" href="https://swagger.io/specification/" target="_blank" title="OpenAPI"> <a href="https://wiki.ivoa.net/twiki/bin/edit/IVOA/OpenAPI?topicparent=IVOA.2024ARoadmap;nowysiwyg=0" rel="nofollow" title="OpenAPI (this topic does not yet exist; you can create it)">
OpenAPI </a> </a>
New draft 2.2 was delayed as per
P3T new efforts. This version will include - Simplified transfer negotiation - Improved recursive operations - Simplified quotas
New draft 2.1 or 3.0 is being evaluated.
