Rationale

The aim of the GWS WG is to define the use of Grid technologies and web services within the VO context and to investigate, specify, and implement required standards in this area. This group was formed from a merger of the Web Services group and the Grid group, ordered at the IAU General Assembly in 2003.

Participation

The GWS is following a roadmap for our activities, that we update at every IVOA Interoperability Meeting which occur twice per year. The GWS has a different topic of discussion and ongoing activities and interacts with other WG in the IVOA. Discussions are led on the GWS mailing list, where everybody can post his ideas and comments or follow the discussions. See the GWS mailing list.

The GWS is organizing periodic teleconferences dedicated to specific topics or general update of the activities.

The most important output of the working group are the specification documents that formalizes the modeling efforts led by this group and propose standards to the IVOA standardization process. Some members take an active role in writing these documents, while others review the documents, make comments, and/or possibly test and implement the proposed design.

Teleconference

Current Roadmap

Below is the roadmap for the Grid and Web Services Working Group after Virtual Interop 2020 (Nov).

Science Platforms

• Towards a Theory IG and GWS workshop on science platforms at Interop "gemini" 2021
  • Encourage collaboration. Share knowledge, code and resources with similar institutes. Organic convergence.
  • Identify possible ideas for standards on SP (e.g. common libraries to read/write data)
  • Describe POSIX access to a platform. New VOResource Interface Type?
  • How can we remote execute codes on data? What infrastructure and information did you need? What problems did you face?
• Encouraged groups to use Kubernetes. Data centres will be running services as containers. Natural step to run user code in containers. Standards after more experience.

Authentication and Authorization

• SSO version 1.2 needs to be discussed (Sara.Bertocco)
  • Describe approach for obtaining token credentials (SSO)
  • Describe approach for validating token credentials (SSO)
  • Define an IVOA "Realm" and how it determines the scope of services for which a token is applicable. (SSO)
• Credential Delegation protocol: introduce delegation based on token.
